Soren, a barn owlet, is knocked from his nest by a nasty older brother and kidnapped by evil chick-snatching owls. Snatched from his idyllic world of family life and knightly lore--"first meat," "first bones," first fir"--Soren is taken to an orphanage where he meets an elf owl. Together they devise humorous methods to avoid "moon blinking," a form of brainwashing, while scheming about how to learn to fly so they can escape.
